In 2008, this large social housing scheme was threatened with demolition and became a controversial conservation case. The government refused to give it protection as a historic building despite widespread public support for its retention. This book uncovers the history of the project, arguing for its historical and architectural significance and for its future role in local housing provision. It includes support from architects Richard Rogers and Zaha Hadid, with previously unpublished text and pictures by Alison + Peter Smithson and photographs by Sandra Lousada and Ioana Marinescu. Biografía del autor Dr. Alan Powers is a British author specialising in books on architecture and a Professor in Architecture and Cultural History at the University of Greenwich in east London; he is also Chairman of Pollock's Toy Museum in London. As a book author, he has concentrated on 20th century British architecture, with an interest in architectural preservation. He has also written books on the design of book jackets and the artist Eric Ravilious. He joint editor of the journal Twentieth Century Architecture for the Twentieth Century Society. An expert on 20th century architecture, Alan Powers was awarded an Honorary Fellowship of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 2008.
